Call 510-465-8480 for more info Secondly, COME OUT AND SEE THE FUTURE OF OAKLAND THEATER (Oakland Public Theater, that is) Who do you call when your bathtub drain suddenly expands to nearly three feet across and you see a ladder down in the hole? Or if you are a young woman who first finds a sword, and then a 15th Century swordsman appear in front of you? The answers to these and other life-changing questions can be found in the humorous new existential work, WHAT BURNS by Oakland playwright Anna Budd. WHAT BURNS is the first presentation of the Oakland Public Theater 2002-2003 season. The play will be given two staged readings, October 13 and 14, at 7pm, in Lisser Hall on the Mills College campus, 5000 MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland. The performance is free (a $5 donation is requested, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds). Everyone is welcome, and encouraged to stay afterwards for a brief post-show discussion. A semi-finalist in this year’s Bay Area Playwrights Festival, WHAT BURNS takes a very modern look at some age-old themes such as love, revenge, career-changes, and the terrain of the underworld. Directed by Kathryn Seabron, the play features the talents of Karen Hirst, Unique Holland, Colin Hussey, Cec Levinson, Kailyn Mccord, Wendy Taylor and others. WHAT BURNS kicks off OPT Theater Unplugged series this season. Theater Unplugged is a staged reading series exploring those plays which might best serve the company’s mission of reflecting the diversity of the Bay Area and American culture. It also allows OPT to showcase the Bay area’s enormous talent pool of actors, directors, techies, and playwrights, thanks to a grant from the California Arts Council Multicultural Entry Program. Their responsibilities will consist of 3 set changes during the play (two fast ones in front of the audience, and one leisurely one during intermission). We would need them to be with us all next week, which is our tech week, and then on performance dates: Oct. 25, 26, 27; Oct. 31, Nov. 1, 2, 3; Nov. 7, 8, 9 and 10. The perfs on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 and 10 are matinees at 2pm. It may be possible to do a kind of swing shift, so that no one person has to be present at all performances. The other request is for a stage manager for the holiday show. The responsibilities are not heavy, since the set changes only once, during intermission, and tech will be simple. Performances are Nov. 29 (yes, the day after Thanksgiving--always good to have something to do to work off all those carbohydrates), Nov. 30, Dec. 1; Dec. 5, 6, 7, 8; Dec. 12, 13, 14, 15; Dec. 19, 20 and 21. Open roles are: Sister Mary Hubert - sidekick to the Mother Superior. She needs to be an alto or mezzo who can tap dance (doesn't have to be good - we have a choreographer who will help with that) and sing gospel. Should be late 30s to 50+. Sister Mary Amnesia - "The picture of innocence." Every day is (literally)new to her. A good semi-operatic legit soprano. She could be in her 20s or 30s. Sister Robert Anne - Tough, streetwise, and with a heart of gold. A mezzo who can belt. Any age. This casting is color-blind, race-blind, etc. Clearly must be able to dance to some extent. Those who "move well" are welcome. MUST be able to sing solos! MUST be able to sing harmony! Acting ability is good, and ability means more than experience. Auditioners should bring a prepared comic monologue no longer than two minutes, if they have one prepared. There will be cold readings available if they do not have a prepared monologue. Be prepared to sing. There will be an accompanist available, so bring sheet music for the accompanist. Auditioners may sing a capella if they wish. Story synopsis from the script: "The Order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken was founded in the seventh century by Saint Wilfred, a Bishop of England. He established the first convent and school known as the Wilfrid Academy. His motto was "We don't teach beauty--we radiate it!" Many years later a small group of pioneering sisters set out for America to establish a motherhouse in Cleveland. But they got off the plane in Newark by mistake. The order was "found" by the Newark Airport Police and the new motherhouse was established in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was at that time that the Order of St. Wilfrid elected to change the name to the Little Sisters of Hoboken and they have been affectionately known as the "Little Hobos" ever since. It was from this convent that Sister Mary Regina, Sister Mary Hubert, and Sister Robert Anne, set sail for the Mediterranean to establish their leper colony. Today the order has both nuns and brothers as members--all doing various good works in the diocese of Newark. They also operate Mount Saint Helen's School in Hoboken." While there is a story, most of the show is in song. Here is a rough schedule: Preview nights are January 15-16, 2003. Opening is Jan 17 (Friday). Performances are Thursday through Sunday for five weeks. Final performance is Saturday February 15. Rehearsals start the beginning of November. The choreographer will be working with the cast starting November 7. With the holidays in the middle of things, I need to get everyone's conflicts ASAP to lay out an overall rehearsal schedule. ------=_NextPart_000_0320_01C27AFE.1397EA00-- From piercepeter@yahoo.com Thu Oct 24 20:15:46 2002 From: piercepeter@yahoo.com (Pierce Peter Brandt) Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 13:15:46 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [BATA] AMT presents master class for musical theater actors Message-ID: <20021024201546.53998.qmail@web20303.mail.yahoo.com> AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE OF SAN JOSE presents a Master Class with award-winning NYC/LA/SF actor Pierce Peter Brandt (AEA). Learn from and work one-on-one with a professional who has performed lead roles in Broadway productions and in many of the country's top professional regional theaters. Four Tuesday evenings, November 5 - 26. Limited enrollment, only a few spaces remaining. *************************************** ABOUT THE MASTER CLASS Performing a song in musical theater requires much more than just learning notes and lyrics, producing them pleasantly with the voice, and standing up to sing them. Whether in an audition or an actual performance, while singing ability is certainly an important part of the picture, in today's musical theater, acting is first priority. And, ACTING FOR MUSICAL THEATER REQUIRES A UNIQUE APPROACH; for example, unlike non-musical acting, acting while singing does not lend itself to improvisation or the "moment-to-moment" approach. Acting must not be a secondary afterthought to singing. Excellent musical theater song performance appears as though it is being spontaneously created at the very moment it is happening. However, creating this illusion requires dedication, time, research, careful planning, and practice. It's about integrating honest acting and truthful, eloquent lyric interpretation with musicianship, vocal ability, and confidence, and that's just the beginning. Whether you consider yourself an actor/singer or a singer/actor, if being successful in musical theater is in your plans, this class is essential. Are you ready to take the next step towards being an exceptional musical theater performer? Are you interested in being the best musical theater performer you can be? This class focuses on showing you how to identify and cultivate those seemingly elusive elements of song performance that casting directors search for and audiences love. It is these elements that make the difference between an exceptional musical theater performer and a so-so or even a fairly good one. COVERED IN THE CLASS: > approaching the song as a monologue > body language and visual focus > when to "sing pretty" and when not to > how to relate to your audience (whether in an audition or actual performance) > song choice for auditions > how to create a professional and/or professional-looking musical theater resume > other key principles WHO SHOULD ATTEND Class participants of all levels of experience (teens to adults) are welcome. All participants will be expected to have at least 2 musical theater songs fully prepared and memorized to be worked-on and performed in class. NOTE This class is not a voice lesson or singing class. While general advice on vocal techniques or approaches may be offered, this class does not focus on the technicalities of using your vocal instrument.
