Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation
Dates & Guest Artists Set for National Symposium
"Directing a New American Theatre" May 30 - June 1
May 30th - June 1st, Friday through Sunday - Symposium: Directing a New
American Theatre
Directing a New American Theatre will examine contemporary approaches to
theatrical project development, artistic collaborations, institutional
leadership, production and textual analysis, stylistic voices and
performance techniques. The symposium will bring together theatrical
leaders from around the country to examine the role and responsibilities of
artists in the development of new works, and to explore ways in which plays
and musicals can be relevant, economically competitive and theatrically
compelling in an ever-shifting media culture. Directing a New American
Theatre will consider what theatre can do that film and television cannot.
It will propose that the theatre - now more than ever - has an important and
vital role in the entertainment industry. Using the successful model of
SDCF's past symposia, Directing a New American Theatre will engage leaders
in the theatrical industry to investigate, analyze and elaborate on the
symposium's themes through master classes, panel discussions, technique
demonstrations and networking receptions as part of a 2½-day symposium.
Symposium guest artists include: Karen Azenberg, Gabriel Barre, Arthur
Bartow, Megan Bezak, Mary Kate Burke, Thomas Cott, Mark Dendy, Steven
Druckman, Fritz Ertl, Jef Evans, Michael Greif, Gabriel Grilli, Miranda
Hoffman, David Henry Hwang, Tom Igoe, Chris Jaehnig, Devanand Janki, John
Kimbell, Rob Marx, Ryan Mueller, James C. Nicola, Diane Paulus, Neil Pepe,

Since 1965, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation (SDCF) has
been the only national organization dedicated exclusively to supporting the
craft and artistry of theatrical directors and choreographers. Headquartered
in New York City with core programs in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco
and Seattle, SDCF serves artists and communities throughout the nation. Each
year, SDCF helps thousands of directors and choreographers by offering
critical career-building initiatives, such as workshops, seminars, symposia,
craft publications, mentoring programs, professional observerships and
artistic fellowships. They represent a one-of-a-kind nexus between
theatrical masters, mid-career professionals and rising artists, where
knowledge and expertise are shared, hands-on opportunities are provided, and
professional skills are honed.
