Helen of Troy (Revised)
Written by Wolfgang Hildesheimer, then translated and now directed by David
Fenerty, Helen of Troy (Revised) is a most timely look at a timeless subject --
Helen of Troy, perhaps the western world’s first personification of the 60s
slogan “Make Love, Not War.” Did her beauty cause the war, as myth would have
it (“...the face that launched a thousand ships.”), or did the war happen
despite her? At last we can hear the story from her point of view. Helen of
Troy (Revised), is mostly Helen’s play, of course, but the remaining three
roles also give actors something to sink their teeth into: Hermione requires an
actress who can make the switch from truculent teen to blithely condescending
young woman; Paris shows some unexpected qualities, then undergoes a startling
change; and finally, Menelaos is a classic villain, made to order for a mature,
experienced actor.
QUEEN HELEN (30s-40s) -- An intelligent, attractive, passionate and flirtatious
woman with a wicked sense of humor, she’s looking for anybody but
KING MENELAOS (late 30s or older) -- A pompous yet devious warmonger, who’d
like to raise his approval rating by starting an overseas conflict with
PARIS (20s-early 30s) -- A blindingly handsome young prince, who seeks inner
peace, good times, but probably not
HERMIONE (late teens to very early 20s) -- A nun-like waif with a sewing
addiction; this only daughter of Helen and Menelaos has no wish but to better
the world by making herself more perfect.
