Auditioning Techniques for Film
Project your personal warmth into your audition. Practice a guided
step-by-step process of preparing for a film audition, from receiving
the sides to going on camera. Learn quick and effective cold reading
skills: use scooping (no slides!) and split focus techniques so that
every line you deliver will be in the sight lines of the camera. Break
down your script into group thoughts and bear change to build honest
characters through literal and emotional subtext. Special guest Joie
Landeaux holds a M.F.A. in directing from Columbia University and
employs her unique system of teaching at the Joie Landeaux Acting
Studio. She has directed films and plays and coached actors in San
Francisco and New York City for Broadway, film and television for 25
years. She is currently teaching her classes at the Nancy Hayes Casting
Agency. Location: San Francisco, TBD. Registration starts: August 2. To
register: Call Theatre Bay Area at (415) 430-1140 x10. Cost: $35 for
members/$50 nonmembers.
Wednesday, August 11, noon-2PM
Financial Planning for Theatre Companies: East Bay
Many performing arts organizations are administered under title 503(b)
as nonprofit businesses. This places specific fiduciary responsibilities
on the board of directors in terms of how the organizations' endowment
accounts are administered and managed. Yet many organizations do not
even have a basic Investment Policy Statement. In this session, Adam
Messinger, financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, will discuss how using
a professional money manager can provide organizations with access to
the same talent that major corporations rely on for investment
expertise. In addition, participants will be able to fill out a
risk-tolerance evaluation that can help their organizations frame an
Investment Policy Statement. Location: Berkeley Merrill Lynch Office,
1995 University Ave., 4th Floor, Berkeley. RSVP by: August 10. To
register: Call Theatre Bay Area at (415) 430-1140 x10. Cost: Free.

Creating Dialogue Fearlessly: Public & Media Relations in Changing Times
A recent study concluded that the average American is barraged by over
6,000 individual "media messages" per day. Imagine how much the average
reporter receives. Every day, there is more competition for space and
more forums in which news can be presented. For nonprofits, how to
"compete" in an ever-changing news arena is the question. David Perry,
whose practice David Perry & Associates (www.davidperry.com) specializes
in working with nonprofits, will share his perspective and some tips for
"creating dialogue fearlessly" in a crowded media market. The author of
the 1993 Media Guide for Nonprofits, published by Media Alliance, Perry
regularly lectures on the ethics of public relations and co-teaches
"Media & Mantra," which provides PR basics with relaxation techniques.
Location: The Flood Building, 870 Market Street, Suite 670. Registration
starts: August 2. To register: Call Theatre Bay Area at (415) 430-1140
x10. Cost: $15 for members/$30 nonmembers.

The Trigger Approach
Many actors understand the tremendous value and freedom of being "in the
moment" and seek a clear and practical approach to help them do so. The
Trigger Approach, originally developed by Richard Seyd, is a way to help
actors do just that by making very specific choices with the text. By
breaking the text down thought by thought and finding the impulse or
trigger, you can unlock a more vibrant and present emotional state
effortlessly. Also covered will be subtext, making high-stakes choices,
adjusting for film vs. stage performance, and a practical approach to
monologues and auditioning. Workshop leader, Robert Weinapple, has been
acting, directing and teaching in the Bay Area since 1988. He also
teaches acting at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Seydways
Studios, and he directs and teaches acting to youth at various schools
throughout the Bay Area. Location: San Francisco, TBD. Registration
starts: August 2. To register: Call Theatre Bay Area at (415) 430-1140
x10. Cost: $35 for members/$50 nonmembers.
