Reminder: The deadline to submit reviews for the next Performer's/Artist's
Voice is July 16th. If you've seen a production that has moved or provoked
you, put your reactions into words and e-mail us at
voice@performancelab.org.
The next issue of Performer's/Artist's Voice will hit the streets in
September.

Performers'/Artists' Voice
What is it?
P/AV is a new chapbook/zine in which artists write about each others' work.
We need you, readers, artists and performers, to write down your reactions
to work that you go see. P/AV was created in response to the sorry state of
arts coverage in our local mainstream periodicals. Publications such as
InDance and Callboard have pulled more than their own weight. Now it's time
for us do pull ours - and to have fun doing it!
P/AV is a labor of love. Initially, P/AV will be a simple plain-cover
chapbook that will be distributed wherever people can see it - bookstores,
cafes, theaters, etc. Although we'd like to offer it for free, that probably
won't work as well as asking readers for a few dollars, since, sadly, people
often don't value what they can't pay for!
The fall 2004 deadline is Friday, July 16. If you want to write for us, and
know that you can't do it by then, drop us an e-mail at
voice@performancelab.org.
Who can write for P/AV?
Choreographers, musicians, theater artists, visual artists, writers and
people in the various artistic scenes in this town who have something to say
about what they're seeing on stages, in galleries, in music halls and in
process anywhere in the Bay Area.
The Goals of P/AV
* To cover our incredible ferment of local arts from the grass-roots point
of view.
* To offer a service to each other as artists that can create a bridge
between different artistic genres and scenes.
* To reveal the incredible amount of creativity and effort going on in the
Bay Area - something that isn't at all obvious in our mainstream local media
coverage - and to show that our efforts as artists are more than a
ghettoized form of expression.
* To offer a glance at many different events going on in town to folks who
may be too busy or low on cash to go see them.
* To really WATCH and ANALYZE work, not just regurgitate press releases.
* To provide a legitimate source of quotations and impressions that artists
can FREELY use in their publicity materials. (Please note that anything in
this zine is under a form of copyright in which quotation is allowed without
permission, just so long as the author and publication are referenced.)
Guidelines
Go see the show that you want to see, whether it's dance, visual art, music,
or some uncategorizable event. (You can't write about your own show.) Take
notes, save a program, talk to people in the audience or whatever
information you need - use your instincts. Write your piece as soon as you
can, then edit it to your satisfaction.
Say what you see. Be specific. Give reasons for feelings. (If you say "I
liked X," then say WHY.) Remember that these articles/pieces are in support
of the artistic communities, even if the writer speaks in a critical voice.
E-mail it to us at voice@performancelab.org by the deadline. If you don't
have e-mail, send it to us at:

Form
ANYTHING. Formal review, analytical essay, first person narrative, five
verses of Haiku, cartoons, drawings, crossword puzzles - be creative! We're
not trying to recreate the local newspapers or InDance, but to add to what's
available. The only limitation is that we have permission to edit for
grammar, spelling, or for the guidelines described above.
Copyright
P/AV is covered by a Creative Commons "Attributions-NoDerivs" copyright, in
which the work in the zine can be freely quoted, so long as it is not
altered and the author/publication is credited. In this way, an artist who
finds a great quote in a review can use it in their press materials without
having to obtain permission first. At the same time, the author can be
assured that they will still get credit for their work and that their words
will not be modified in any way.
Donations
We're doing this for free, so any donations you might be able to afford will
help us with paper and printing are most welcome. Eventually, we'd also love
to be able to afford postage.
Please send checks or money orders payable to me or John:

Who are we?
John Baumann and Jennifer Gwirtz are a husband-and-wife team who have worked
in dance, theater and visual/performance art in San Francisco since 1995.
John has been a member of The Field San Francisco Advisory Board and is a
founding Field member. His love of writing began when he studied
play-writing in college. He began creating solo work at The Marsh in the
early 90s and hasn't stopped since. He's also been seen regularly as The
Cowman and other characters in Dan Carbone's surrealistic plays, most
recently "The Impersonation of Angels or The Enigma of Desire."
Jen fell in love with writing twice, once as a child, and again in 1997 when
she fell, almost accidentally, into tech journalism as MacAddict Magazine's
assistant on-line editor. Her performance work has been seen all over San
Francisco and nationally. She joined The Field San Francisco Advisory Board
and has since co-facilitated Field workshops with John. She currently dances
with Mary Armentrout Dance Theater and Maxine Moerman Dance Theatre.
Jen and John formed Right Brain Performancelab in 1998, a San Francisco
group that creates performances that use movement, theater, puppetry, vocal
work and text. Together they've performed at Dance Mission, The Marsh and
other local venues. They love to collaborate and to bring community together
towards a common goal. They've taken their work on the road to venues in New
Zealand, Point Reyes and other locations.
