Overview
The International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), the leading =
defense bar organization headquartered in Chicago, has established =
itself as the premier institution for teaching trial skills and advocacy =
to young lawyers. The IADC has operated the IADC Trial Academy at the =
University of Boulder - Colorado for the past 31 years. We are moving =
this week-long, annual Trial Academy to Stanford University this summer =
and so need to recruit local actors to help us achieve our goals. The =
purpose of the Academy is the development and refinement of trial skills =
for young lawyers. These lawyers have generally been in practice from =
two to six years and have completed under five jury trials, often as =
second chair. During the Academy, top lawyers from around the country =
serve as faculty, teaching and refining the young lawyer's skills.

Witness Overview:
You would be participating in the role of a witness in a mock accident =
case. You will be given a character booklet to study a month prior to =
the academy and then your role would be to perform while you are cross =
and direct examined by the "student" lawyers (note: the booklet is =
sent a month ahead not because it will take a month to study, but rather =
to give you flexibility in your preparation).

All events would occur at the Stanford Law School in classrooms set up =
to simulate a courtroom, with lawyers posing as jury members, defense =
lawyers and judge. There would be a faculty member in each classroom =
courtroom critiquing the student lawyers as they demonstrate their =
skills at direct and cross-examinations. While you have to know the =
facts of your character by studying your character booklet, the part is =
more improvisational since we cannot determine ahead of time what =
questions the lawyers will ask.

Witness Preparation/Participation
Participation as a Witness is on both Monday, August 2 from 11:30 am - =
5:30 pm AND Tuesday, August 3 from 11:30 am - 5:30 p.m You would also =
need to attend a MANDATORY 2-hour orientation the morning of Saturday, =
July 31 (from approximately 8:30 - 10:30 am).

You will be asked to study your character prior to attending the =
orientation. At the orientation you will get an overview of the program =
and our needs and receive other pertinent information. This meeting =
ensures that you and the faculty are ready to "perform" and teach. You =
will then be asked to re-review your character materials over the =
weekend and come prepared to act your role on Monday.

On both Monday and Tuesday, August 2 and 3rd, we will serve you lunch, =
you will then have an informal prep meeting with the student lawyer who =
will be working with you, and then you will be assigned to your room for =
the student workshop on direct and cross-examination of lay witnesses. =
In the classroom, the faculty will oversee the student lawyers perform =
their cross and direct examination techniques in a simulated courtroom =
setting with you acting as a witness in the given case. The student =
lawyer's performance will be reviewed and critiqued. Your feedback will =
be welcomed and encouraged. =20

Final Notes
We will provide you with any necessary parking permits for the =
University and upon completion of your role on Tuesday, August 3rd you =
will receive $200 total. This experience is rewarding and beneficial =
for those who participated in more way than one.
