Learn to utilize a HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TOOL for all theater practitioners: crafting a narrative story-line, characters and dramatic action with no words! Whether you are interested in integrating puppets into a play or learning more about the power of visual metaphors and non-verbal action this workshop offers writers a completely different perspective. Using Lunatique Fantastiques unique style of found object puppetry, this class will teach students will learn how to write non-verbally, and will enhance your ensemble skills. Over two days, students will create scenes entirely from scratch using only the objects that you bring to class. Through hands-on experimentation and exercises, you will reintroduce yourself to the fine art of stillness and learn how to use techniques such as rhythm change, movement analysis, story boarding, and cartooning to look at how to write scathingly funny, socially-relevant non verbal theatre yes, with NO WORDS! You can bring in an idea that youre
currently working on, or create one on-the-spot during the workshop.
In 1997, Liebe Wetzel founded the renowned puppet theater company, Lunatique Fantastique. Her first star, a 30-inch remnant of upholstery foam, headlined Foamantics and other early pieces and earned foam the title of the company mascot. Since then the company created Objects in Predicaments at the San Francisco Fringe Festival, followed by Snake in the Basement: the Prosecution of Rev. Bill Pruitt, a true story about a Presbyterian pedophile starring newspaper, table napkins, three boxes, and a swath of scarlet fabric. Snake brought Liebe the Goldie Award for being a "Local Outstanding Discovery." The next work, also an award-winning adult piece, was Brace Yourself. A leg brace, cane, high heels, cooking pots, and bike wheels perform this story of polio and lifelong disability. In 2001, Brace Yourself was the top box office hit of the San Francisco Fringe Festival and won "Best of the S.F. Fringe." Also in 2000 Lunatique Fantastique kicked off an annual sold-out holiday amusement
for kids, The Wrapping Paper Caper,
In 2002 the company contracted the services of several lemons, artichokes and assorted vegetables for My Dinner with Lunatique Fantastique, which played to sold out houses at New Conservatory Theatre Center. The Japanese tea set from My Dinner became the centerpiece and star of Executive Order 9066. This production is the moving story of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War 11 and is the first in Wetzels War Trilogy. The second piece in this trilogy is the award winning Fixed Boundary, voted Best of the S.F. Fringe in 2003. Using only toilet paper rolls, a plunger and a yardstick, the company evokes the complexities and tragedy of territorial war inspired by events in the Middle East. Construction Cabaret, a hardware variety show and burlesque premiered at New Conservatory Theatre Center in November 2003.
In 2004 the company began touring playing in Texas and Londons West End!
